Can anyone tell me what the "FS" in this release means?
Thanks!

Hmmm...
To answer my own query, I have a feeling the "FS" must mean "Full Screen" (as in "formatted to fit your TV screen";) 'cuz IMDb lists the film's aspect ratio as 1.85 to 1, whereas this release (at 960x714) would be 1.34 to 1.

You are correct. FS stands for Full Screen. That's the aspect ratio films were shot in back then. Also television, through most of the 20th century.

@meridian—Sorry, I find myself a bit confused here. Would you say that IMDb's listing of the original aspect ratio as 1.85 to 1 is incorrect?
It's listed the same here: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Bad-Seed-Blu-ray/25325/
Also, if you compare these screenshots: http://115.imagebam.com/download/HENy8NR8fPiWgxT6A06USQ/49603/496024804/The.Bad.Seed.1956.1080p.BluRay.x264.DTS-FGT_s.jpg
to these: http://images.imagebam.com/cb/66/06/c812de590704473.jpg,
the latter (this release) have been cropped.

Byala, I appreciate that you both took the trouble to answer my original question, and in my follow-up comment I don't think I ever tried to say FS stood for anything else. I was just addressing the part I was confused about: the aspect ratio bit. (I meant to generate discussion, not an argument.)

Actually, this film may well have been originally released in 4:3 ratio. Not uncommon in the 1950s.
The "specs" at IMDB aren't 100% reliable. The screencaps at IMDB are all 4:3, for instance.

As many widescreen films were cropped at the sides to make them 4:3 "FS" for the VHS releases, now many old films and TV shows made in 4:3 are cropped top and bottom to make fake 16:9 widescreen releases for the idiots who feel cheated if any part of their screen is black, regardless that hats and feet are cut off.

Recently HBO re-released "The Wire" in widescreen, after it was completely shot in 4:3, to cater for this prejudice. They spent some time to try to make it look good, but it was still screwing with the original composition.

So our videos are still being butchered to mollify idiots.

No one was ridiculing anyone, guy-who-can't-mind-his-own-business-and-wants-to-make-trouble-where-there-is-none. When you both seemed to indicate that films didn't come out back then in the aspect ratio noted on IMDb, which IS often wrong about things, I looked into it, not knowing whether you were wrong or right or what, and then I offered up what I found for, yes, discussion.
If that really bothers you, that seems like a you-problem. Disagreement isn't ridicule, at least not in my opinion.
What TomMix adds is the kind of thing I THOUGHT might stem from my comment.
Sorry to upset you, Byala. (sincerely)
