This a 4-episode TV series. Why combine them into one huge segmented file? Why not one per file?

And 4x50 minutes for 480p is 4.1 GB?
I could believe that for 1080p, but 480p should come in at 800 MB or less.
It's a TV series from 1998. It isn't HD no matter how many bits you waste on it.

Well, I got the bloated file anyway. Will reencode it (since you don't need 2500 kbps for 480p TV series) and clean it up to something more useful.

The 4 episodes are run together into one mp4 file

And the aspect ratio is wrong. It's neither the 16:9 the file sets it to be nor 4:3; it's actually 14:9, a ratio used by the BBC for a few years in the late 90s.

So I will have to fix that too so wheels are round and characters aren't bloated.

It would not have been more effort to do it right (4 separate episodes; correct ratio; sane bitrate) when it was encoded.

@TomMix
I like your enthusiasm to put the encoders on notice for some off the crap they post, unfortunately i feel you are wasting your breath as only RMTeam seem to listen about posts here.

I don't expect the encoders or RMTeam to take any notice, just bitching.
But also giving some info in case others interested in the show (Robert Carlyle did some great TV back then) want to make something of this.
The DVD just came out so maybe another group wlll do a better release.

But the video of this is a good source. I'm currently reencoding this with MeGui.
For those into that kind of thing, I'm using this AVS script:
For each episode I use a different Trim.

At 800 kbps this makes 4x280 MB, and it looks better than the original.

==========
FFmpegSource2("jojo.mp4",atrack=-1,fpsnum=-1,fpsden=1,threads=1)
#852x480 25 fps 3:26:17 -- should be 14:9 = 747x480
ConvertToMono() #Both tracks are identical

LSFmod(defaults="fast", strength=120, dest_x=748, dest_y=480)

__END__

split episodes, omit previously

1_Steal_the_Herd.avs
Trim(1,75356).FadeIn(5).FadeOut(5)

2_Working_Week.avs
Trim(78091,151200).FadeIn(5).FadeOut(5)

3_Sinking_the_Belgrano.avs
Trim(153838,228456).FadeIn(5).FadeOut(5)

4_When_Love_Goes_Wrong.avs
Trim(231154,0).FadeIn(5).FadeOut(5)

@drbadass
I guess you just Googled this to find places to link spam your software, which is "free' In the sense of "free trial" which will then nag you to pay for it or stop working.

If the DAR was the only thing wrong with this video, I could have just changed that by remuxing with MKVmergegui (which is really free, not "free trial";). But that wasn't the only problem, and not the reason I reencoded it, as I explained.

Not many people are aware that BBC shows of this time often used the ratio 14:9. Anyone encoding old TV shows should have known though.
