They just muxed DVD MPEG into an MKV container.
If encoded AVC would be 1/4 the size for the same quality.

Yes there is. Just override the DAR in your player.
You can even run it through MKVmergeGUI and change the DAR in the file in a few seconds without reencoding.

My remote has an aspect button. If the station broadcasts a 4:3 show but signals it 16:9 I can just force it to 4:3.

You can't have "wide screen support" if the show wasn't made in widescreen.

You can fuck up the image by stretching it or cropping off the top and bottom and zooming in if it makes you feel better.

Heard of a little TV show called "The Wire"? That was made in 4:3. They chose to use the ratio. same as some filmmakers still choose to use black and white.

I suppose you'd disdain "Casablanca", made in 4:3 black and white.

The problems with this rip aren't the ratio, it's the codec. If they were going to leave it mpeg, they should have just made an ISO. If you're making MKV, use a modern codec like AVC and reduce the size by 75%. Also the frame rate is 29.97, didn't even bother to IVTC it.

There is a huge difference between films that were cropped to "full screen" for 4:3 TV with shows that were made in 4:3.

The only way to make a 4:3 into widescreen is to stretch or crop it.

I've seen releases here where some idiots did that: the first JJ Star Trek was here in a "widescreen" version that turned out to have people's heads cut off. Some asshole had taken a video cropped to 4:3 and cropped off more to make pretend widescreen to placate the idiots who won't watch anything that isn't in widescreen.

This show. Sealab 2021, reused animation from the 1972 Hanna-Barbara cartoon "Sealab 2020". 4:3 is the "correct" ratio FOR THIS SHOW.

If you can't handle 4:3, then press the fucking zoom button, cut off the actors's heads, and make it fit. Because nothing is more important than not having black bars on the sides.

Reminds me of people who think they can reencode a low-res video at higher resolution and get higher quality.

Every review and every screencap of this says it's 4:3.
Some websites mislabelled their ads. That's all.

Buy one of these imaginary widescreen DVDs if you want.
If you belive any bullshit you read online, maybe some Nigerian wants to give you $10 MILLION DOLLARS too.

Not 1.78 like modern widescreen TV, but cinema widescreen like Lawrence of Arabia. All made from a 1972 4:3 TV cartoon.
Maybe they put two frames next to each other. Or maybe some idiot pasted something from another product and no one noticed, until you were silly enough to believe it.

I showed you a review by someone who bought the damn thing and said it IS NOT WIDESCREEN. All you've got is some ads that make no sense.

Watch Archer. Extremely funny, has a plot. And, it's in widescreen too.
