Good that it's high definition.
Bad that they fucked up the composition by cropping the top and bottom to make the original 4:3 into fake 16:9.

@justintyler
I define "fake 16:9" as being cropped to make it fit.
They might have got a bit of the sides from the original film, but not enough. This is cropped to fit.

HBO did the same with The Wire. Insisted on fucking with the ratio when they converted it to HD.

Only high profile show I know that got it right was Star Trek TOS. Shot on 35 mm film, rescanned and cleaned up, looks beautiful in 4:3 as it was intended.

This is actually worse tahn colorsijg B/W movies. Wiht that you can just turn daturation down to zero and get back he original. With this, its lost forever.

Of course, this is Seinfeld. The jokes remain, just now they have less space over their head and more furniture on the left and right.

@4:3 is so 80s
-- The show was made ni the 80s.
It was made in 4:3.
You can't go back in tme and recompse the scenes as 16:9.

I know why it's being done. Some people think "4:3 is so 80s" and won't watch it otherwise.
Thanks to those idiots, the only versions available going forward will be the butchered ones.

(Yeah, we can choose to find old DVDs or XVids at low resolution. Or VHS. And we can buy a 20" CRT B&W TV to watch them on too. We cannot choose to watch them at high resolution in the original ratio.)

@Dny6
You're the one who is "very wrong".
It's not about resolution, it's about ratio.
They didn't just rescan at HD.

Some scenes they could use part of the film that was outside the 4:3 frame. But often also they cropped the top and bottom so what was left was 16:9.

I don't really care about Seinfeld. I do care that they did this to The Wire and will do it to every other show now. We'll never see a HD version of classic TV shows in their original composition, only the fake widescreen because of morons who think they are being cheated if their screens have any black on them.
